EA’s Frank Gibeau referring to the Wii as a “legacy console” seems to me a bit premature. With a strong month in March, the Xbox 360 will have outsold the Wii in the U.S. over the past year, but that’s not necessarily reason for Nintendo to panic. More than 450,000 Wii systems were sold last month and Nintendo still has a new Zelda to release, not to mention whatever other surprises it has up its sleeve. Games like Just Dance 2 are enjoying incredible success on Wii, and while that might be the exception to the rule for third-party publishers, it doesn’t seem like the public’s interest in the system has faded to the extent some are suggesting.

Today’s highlights:

  • How gamers can help earthquake relief efforts in Japan.

  • EA Games president believes controversy should be courted.
  • Sony wants to use the PS3 and LittleBigPlanet as educational tools.
  • The Old Republic doesn’t play like a “shopping list,” as WoW does.
  • Rocksmith is a new guitar game where you play with a real guitar.
  • How many 2010 games were rated Mature?
  • Unboxing the United States 3DS.
  • Tina thinks she’s Michael Jackson.
  • Creating a Mii on 3DS of Frank.

And here’s what else happened today:

Wii a “Legacy Console,” EA Boss on Wii 2

For a time, the Wii was the big thing, but it’s now faded into the status of a legacy console on par with the PlayStation 2, according to EA Games president Frank Gibeau. He said, “Now, [Nintendo are] coming back with a second act. I think they know that. They’re very self-aware as an organization and a very powerful brand.” He added, “They understand the dynamics and the fact that HD consoles is a booming part of business right now. Legacy platforms like PS2 and the Wii have dropped off significantly. They’re not stupid. They’re going to figure something out. They’re going to come back at it.”
